$160,000 Finalist Proposal: A Suite of 14 Integrated Murals & Wallworks
Rhythms of Recovery, Eleanor Slater Hospital
Rhode Island State Forensic Psychiatric Unit
A feasibility-ready therapeutic art proposal comprising fourteen integrated large-scale murals and wall panels, developed specifically for five floors of a high-security behavioral-health environment. Using calming biophilic imagery and engineered materials compliant with anti-ligature and infection-control requirements, the proposal demonstrates the studio’s ability to translate complex healthcare constraints into restorative visual systems that support orientation, dignity, and daily use.

• Project Scope: A facility-wide suite of fourteen wall-mounted artworks designed for high-security clinical corridors, patient transition zones, and shared treatment environments. Artwork placement and sequencing are calibrated to align with clinical workflows, patient movement patterns, and staff visibility, ensuring compatibility with operational, safety, and care protocols.
• Therapeutic & Clinical Alignment: Rhythms of Recovery is structured as a supportive visual care system that draws on biophilic landscape cues, impressionistic water imagery, and extended horizon lines to promote emotional regulation, reduce agitation, and support orientation and continuity of experience, aligning with best practices in behavioral-health and trauma-informed design. • Safety, Infection Control & Material Performance: Engineered to meet anti-ligature, infection-control, and risk-management standards, the proposal specifies low-glare, cleanable commercial wallcoverings appropriate for healthcare environments, and shatter-resistant, radiused-edge secure panels for original works. All elements are designed to visually integrate existing protective rails, signage, and clinical monitoring systems to ensure no interference with safety infrastructure or operational protocols. • Operational Feasibility & Long-Term Value: Developed as a code-aware, clinically reviewable delivery strategy, Rhythms of Recovery emphasizes durability, maintainability, and lifecycle compatibility, offering a restorative sense of place while minimizing maintenance burden and supporting long-term use by patients, staff, and families within a high-security psychiatric setting. |
