PROPOSAL SPOTLIGHT
Finalist Proposal: Bright by Nature (2025)
High Line Canal Trail | Eisenhower Park, Denver, Colorado
Four Site-Specific Sculptures | Proposed Budget: $112,000
Bright by Nature imagines an everyday walk punctuated by color, curiosity, and discovery. Four geodesically faceted sculptures inspired by region-specific songbirds, butterflies, chokecherries, and cottonwoods form a connected sequence along the High Line Canal Trail at Eisenhower Park. At approximately three feet high, the works invite close encounters rather than towering over their surroundings. Expressive color, shifting shadows, and selective dichroic accents reward movement and repeated viewing, encouraging visitors to notice something new in the landscape of a familiar neighborhood park. The proposal pairs this welcoming visual language with thoughtful planning for outdoor materials, trail use, and long-term care.

• Project Scope: Four coordinated sculptures create a trail-side sequence of recognizable, regionally-specific ecological forms. Compact proportions and distinct silhouettes are intended to preserve sightlines, establish a sense of arrival, and invite discovery from one artwork to the next.
• Aesthetic Infrastructure: Faceted geometry, expressive color, and selective dichroic accents translate familiar plants and wildlife into changing visual encounters. Viewer interaction comes not from moving parts but from diffracted light, shifting viewpoints, and shimmer effects activated by bodily movement, encouraging visitors to look closer and experience the landscape afresh. • Site & Community Connection: The proposal grows from years of living beside, walking, and cycling the canal during my undergraduate studies. Planned on-site conversations would help refine accent colors, dichroic placement, and sequencing around the observations and experiences of today’s trail users. • Material Rigor & Public Use: Proposed coated-aluminum shells and bases with internal steel supports balance expressive form with outdoor-use requirements. Design priorities include weather resistance, anti-graffiti protection, rounded edges in reach zones, and clear circulation along the trail. • Fabrication & Stewardship: The proposal prioritizes realistic engineering, shop assembly, and installation to emphasize delight, durability, and budget constraints. Concealed anchoring, coordination around tree buffers and irrigation, and provision for individual facet refinishing connect design intent with installation and ongoing care. |
