$59,000 Finalist Proposal: Two 10' Sculptural Storytelling Landmarks

A finalist proposal for a paired sculptural installation that translates Front Range Colorado environmental rhythms into a clear, legible visual narrative within a public park setting. Engineered in Cor-Ten steel with high-performance UV-stable Tnemec finishes and anti-graffiti protection, the concept was developed with engineered drawings and wind-load compliance to support long-term outdoor performance, reinforcing orientation, park identity, and community storytelling.

• Project Scope: A paired installation of two ten-foot vertical sculptural columns precisely scaled to occupy Kensington Park’s 25 by 15 foot concrete pad. The proposal positions the columns as durable, low-maintenance civic markers that maintain clear sightlines and pedestrian circulation while operating as high-visibility landmarks within a heavily used landscape.

• Aesthetic & Community Integration: Season Sentinels operates as a legible environmental storytelling system, translating Westminster, Colorado’s rhythms of sun and moon, wind and water, and seasonal migration into clearly organized vertical iconography that is immediately readable from a distance while also engaging the park's repeat visitors, reinforcing local identity, environmental awareness, and community connection.

• Durability, Safety & Material Performance: Engineered for long-term outdoor exposure and heavy public use, the proposal specifies Cor-Ten steel with industrial-grade protective coatings, UV-stable finishes, and anti-graffiti treatments selected to minimize maintenance demands, resist vandalism, and perform reliably under Front Range weather conditions, including wind, sun, freeze-thaw cycles, and temperature variation.

• Constructability, Code Compliance & Maintenance: Developed as a feasibility-ready, public-works–compatible installation, the project includes engineered drawings, wind-load calculations, anchoring details, and code-aware specifications that integrate directly with the existing city concrete pad. The design prioritizes straightforward installation, long service life, and minimal ongoing maintenance, supporting parks and public works operations while delivering a clear navigational and placemaking benefit for the community.

Perforated Cor-Ten steel icon panels for Season Sentinels, designed as a readable environmental narrative. Twenty-four icons correspond to the twenty-four hours of the day, revealing different meanings when read bottom-to-top, top-to-bottom, side-to-side, and from sculpture to sculpture, allowing the park’s seasonal and ecological story to unfold differently through movement and repeated encounter.
